A man charged with the murder of an 87-year-old Irish man in London last May has pleaded not guilty.

John Mackey died after being attacked in north London while walking home from visiting his local shop on 6 May 2024.

Peter Augustine, aged 58, appeared before the Old Bailey via video link this morning.

He was charged with one count of murder and one count of robbery.

The court heard that a psychiatric defence will not be raised in the case.

Mr Mackey had visited a Co-op supermarket where he bought food and a newspaper, before purchasing his dinner at a nearby kebab shop.

The pensioner sustained head injuries in the attack and died in hospital two days later.

He was described as a "real gentleman" by his family members.

Mr Mackey was originally from Callan, Co Kilkenny, and had moved to London aged 19.

However, he maintained strong links with Ireland and was buried in Callan last June.

A trial has been scheduled to begin on 3 November.
