A man shot dead by police in Milton Keynes in England on Tuesday has been named as Irishman David Joyce.

Mr Joyce, aged 38, has been living in the Milton Keynes area, north of London.

Officers were called to the Milton Keynes station at around 12.55pm on Tuesday following reports of a man carrying a gun.

In a statement, the UK's Independent Office for Police Conduct said that body-worn video footage and CCTV showed a man just outside the Milton Keynes railway station main entrance with a knife in his hand, who ran towards the officers.

"Shortly afterwards the man was shot at close range. We have established that a single shot was fired by one officer," it added.

Mr Joyce is understood to have been living in the UK for sometime.

His next of kin have been informed, and he was formally identified at a post-mortem examination.

IOPC director Derrick Campbell said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this man and all of those affected by this tragic incident.

"Given a man has died after being shot by police, our role is to independently investigate all of the circumstances surrounding this incident including the actions and decisions taken by the police."

Mr Campbell said that the IOPC "have contacted the man's family and will meet with them soon to explain our role. We will keep them regularly updated throughout our investigation".

In a statement, the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said that it is aware of the case in question and is providing consular assistance.

It added that the department does not comment on the detail of individual cases.

Investigations into Tuesday's incident are continuing.
