Scotland's former first minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that her marriage has come to an end.

In a social media post, Ms Sturgeon told followers that she and her husband, former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, had decided to "end" their marriage.

"To all intents and purposes we have been separated for some time now and feel it is time to bring others up to speed with where we are", she said.

"It goes without saying that we still care deeply for each other, and always will. We will be making no further comment", Ms Sturgeon added.

Ms Sturgeon resigned as first minister in 2023. She was arrested in June of that year as part of a police investigation into SNP finances and released without charge.

She has insisted that she is innocent of any wrongdoing.

Mr Murrell was charged last April in connection with embezzlement of SNP funds.

The couple had been together since 2003 and got married in Glasgow in 2010.

In 2016, Ms Sturgeon revealed that she had had a miscarriage in 2011, saying that it was "obviously a painful experience for Peter and I".

Ms Sturgeon served as first minister between 2014 and 2023.
