A speaking event with former British prime minister Liz Truss was interrupted yesterday when a banner of a lettuce descended from the ceiling.
Campaign group Led By Donkeys claimed responsibility for the stunt after sharing videos on the social media networks.
The video shows the banner descending slowly behind Ms Truss as she addressed audience members, revealing a large lettuce with the words "I crashed the economy".
After noticing the banner, Ms Truss gets up to leave, saying: "That is not funny."
Led By Donkeys said on X: "Liz Truss is on a pro-Trump speaking tour. So we dropped a strategically-positioned remote-controlled lettuce banner."
The lettuce is a reference to a stunt by The Daily Star newspaper, who set up a live feed in October 2022 of an unrefrigerated iceberg lettuce next to a photo of Ms Truss, asking readers: "Which wet lettuce will last longer?"
Ms Truss has since blamed "far-left activists" for the stunt.
In a social media post on X, she said that "what happened last night was not funny".
She added that "far-left activists disrupted the event, which then had to be stopped for security reasons. This is done to intimidate people and suppress free speech. I won't stand for it".
"Would we see the same reaction if the activists were far-right?" she asked.
