Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed an extraordinary meeting of the UK cabinet at Downing Street.

He briefed ministers about the war in Ukraine and urged the government to help expand Europe's defence industrial base.

It is the first time a foreign leader has addressed the UK cabinet since former US president Bill Clinton in 1997.

He was welcomed to Downing Street by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who insisted his government would stand by Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky urged the cabinet to help boost Europe's weapons supply to Ukraine and also to lift restrictions on Ukraine using long range weapons to strike Russian territory.

This was Mr Starmer's first time hosting a foreign leader at Downing Street since he took office two weeks ago.

The meeting comes just after yesterday's gathering of the European Political Community in Oxfordshire.

According to Downing Street, 44 European countries including the European Union, have agreed to work together to tackle the use of illegitimate vessels which are circumventing sanctions.

Today's visit will also see the British Prime Minister and Ukranian President agree to a Defence Export Support Treaty to increase military hardware and weaponry production.
