A body found in Tenerife matches the fingerprints of missing British teenager Jay Slater and the cause of death is consistent with multiple injuries sustained during a fall in a rocky area, a Spanish court has said.

The Canary Islands High Court of Justice confirmed that Mr Slater's body was found near the village of Masca yesterday.

Charity LBT Global previously said the remains were found with the 19-year-old's clothes and possessions near his last known location.

The Spanish Civil Guard said Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, could have fallen in the steep and inaccessible area where he was discovered.

His mother Debbie issued a statement through LBT Global acknowledging the "worst news".

"I just can't believe this could happen to my beautiful boy," the statement read. "Our hearts are broken."

Mr Slater went missing on 17 June and his phone was last traced to the Masca ravine in a remote national park.

Matthew Searle, chief executive of LBT Global which has issued several statements on behalf of the family, said it would help repatriate Mr Slater's body and make funeral arrangements.

"There will, of course, be many more hurdles for the family to face in the coming days and we will work with them to make this horrific time as easy as possible," he said.
