A Kinahan organised crime group leader has been extradited to the UK following his arrest in Spain earlier this year.

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) said that 42-year-old Liam Byrne will stand trial for alleged firearms offences following an investigation.

Mr Byrne appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

He was arrested in Majorca in June on foot of a UK extradition warrant.

A senior figure in transnational organised crime, Mr Byrne has long been a target of gardaí, the NCA and other law enforcement agencies.

"The arrest and extradition of Liam Byrne highlights the NCA's ongoing work to target the alleged criminal activities of the Kinahan organised crime group," said Craig Turner, Deputy Director of Investigations at the NCA.

"He will now be remanded in custody until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for the 8 January 2024."
