More than 29,000 people have been intercepted attempting to cross the English Channel this year, according to data compiled by the PA news agency.
The figure comes after more than 300 people were picked up by the UK and French authorities on Tuesday.
A total of 258 people were intercepted on eight boats by the UK while 87 more on five boats were prevented from reaching England by the French authorities.
This follows more than 1,000 people attempting to cross from France during four days including last weekend.
The rising number of crossings, compared to 8,417 intercepted in 2020, has prompted the UK government to consider electronically tagging those arriving on small boats, according to a report in The Sun.
The newspaper claims a Home Office source said the aim would be to stop people absconding while their asylum claims are processed, while also making it easier to deport those who are refused the right to remain.
The Home Office has been approached for a response to the report.
Twenty-seven people died when their boat sank while trying to cross the English Channel last month.
