US Congressman Joe Kennedy has called on the new UK government to respect the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Mr Kennedy, who is a grandson of Robert Kennedy, said he will be watching closely and carefully as the new government plots its post-Brexit future.

"It's important to our great friends in Britain and Ireland that any departure from the EU completely and fully respects the principles and goals of the Good Friday Agreement," he said.

The US President Donald Trump has congratulated Boris Johnson on his election win and said it would lead to a tremendous amount of trade between the two countries.

Congressman Kennedy also made reference to any future post-Brexit trade deal between the US and UK.

"The US has an important role to play in using our leverage in any post-Brexit bilateral trade deal to advance the cause of peace and reconciliation, maintain an open border and ensure a better future for all the communities of the island of Ireland," he said.

Before the UK election, Joe Kennedy and his fellow Democratic Congressmen Richard Neal and Brendan Boyle wrote to the leaders of the major British political parties urging them to demonstrate continued commitment to an open Irish border and the continued implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Last week, the US House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming support for the Good Friday Agreement.

The bill urged the UK and the EU to ensure that Brexit does not threaten peace on the island of Ireland and strongly opposes the reintroduction of a hard border.

It also insisted that any trade agreements between the US and the UK are contingent on meeting the Good Friday Agreement's obligations.
