It began in 2007 with a disaster in the sub-prime mortgage market in the US and developed into a full-blown international banking crisis.
Ireland's economy headed quickly out of a profitable boom to a nationwide recession.
The "unsustainable" industry that once (in 2006) accounted for 23% of the overall economy was badly hit; construction companies went bust, builders became unemployed, and output was at an almost standstill.
It is almost ten years since that crash, and cranes are back in the sky. So, what lessons were learned during the tough times?
