A watermelon from Hokkaido, northern Japan, has fetched ¥350,000 (almost $3,500) at auction.

77 Densuke watermelons were yesterday auctioned at produce markets in the country.

The highest bid for one piece of the fruit was ¥50,000 (or almost $500) greater than last year’s top price.

The brand-name fruit are famous for their black skins and sweet flesh.

Shipments of the fruit will peak in mid-July, which is the summer gift season in Japan.
