A video showing a bear pulling her cub off a busy highway in Canada has warmed the hearts of people around the world.

Professional tornado chaser Ricky Forbes captured the scene in Kootenay National Park, describing it as "the coolest thing I have ever seen".

"It was pretty breathtaking... you usually don’t see something like that", he said.

Forbes and his friends were travelling between Banff and Radium on Highway 97 in British Colombia, Canada, when they saw a makeshift sign stating bears often appear on the road.

They set up on the other side of the highway and within two minutes saw a baby jump over the kerb.

Moments later, the mother bear grabbed her cub and pulled it back over the barrier to safety, while one of the bear’s siblings looked on.

"We were just planning on having some fun for the weekend", said Forbes, adding "that was definitely the high point".
