Protesters clashed with riot police during an opposition rally in the centre of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
In a stand-off resembling a pitched battle, protesters sought to break a police cordon guarding the passage to official buildings.
Demonstrators set five police buses and two trucks on fire.
