The Central Bank of Ireland has launched a limited edition €20 collector coin celebrating Irish monastic art.
The coin depicts a monk at work transcribing the Gospels and New Testament onto manuscript in the scriptorium.
The other side of the coin features the harp and the year-date, as is the tradition with Central Bank and circulating coins.
Director of Consumer Protection Bernard Sheridan said he is confident the coin will prove very popular, both nationally and internationally.
''We are delighted to feature the work of renowned Irish artist Tom Ryan on what is one of the smallest gold coins in the world,'' he added.
The collector coins, which have an issue limit of 12,000 units, are available to the public from today.
They can be purchased directly from the Central Bank on Dublin's Dame Street for €45.
