Mauritius is a small and densely populated island in the Indian Ocean, which has a very strong reputation among honeymooners.
Its population is about 1.5m and the country is roughly the size of Co Wicklow.
Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Pat Kenny, Travel Expert Eoghan Corry said honeymooners would be advised that Mauritius is one of the safest places to pick.
Even though a lot of honeymoon destinations are places of great inequality, he said that Mauritius would be regarded as very safe.
It is an African country, but for marketing reasons it doesn't associate itself with Africa.
Its murder rate tops around 25 or 26 a year - often related to drug trafficking.
The killing of Co Tyrone woman Michaela McAreavey is big news for Mauritius, big news internationally and big news for everyone in the travel business, Mr Corry said.
Very rarely are honeymooners killed anywhere in the world and this tragic death is pretty much a disaster for Mauritius, he added.
The travel expert explained that the area where the murder took place is a luxury region, with infinity pools, palm trees and fine dining.
He said Mauritius differentiates itself with Feng Shui, which was a big craze in 2002, when the hotel was built. It associates itself with the barefoot, white sand luxury, which honeymooners are seeking.
Places like Mauritius look after their tourists, Mr Corry explained.
The big bang luxury hotels in developing countries essentially work by employing a lot of staff, he said. Whereas an Irish luxury hotel would have one member of staff for every ten or 11 guests, you could expect seven members of staff for one guest in some developing countries.
Places like Mauritius do have security staff and he said there is a very low incidence of theft from hotel rooms. Something went very seriously wrong in this instance, Mr Corry said.
In Mauritius, he argued there is not a sense that stepping outside the compound is dangerous, which you do get in other places. And he said there isn't a sense that danger is lurking outside the walls, which is one of the reasons why Mauritius is recommended to honeymooners.
The Legends Hotel, where the murder took place, is very popular with Irish people, he said, with about six of the major tour operators featuring it in brochures.
It is somewhere a lot of the travel agents would have seen for themselves and liked and it would be a place that they would have recommended.
He concluded that travelling on honeymoon is as safe as travel can be.
