Glasnevin to mark graves of war dead

Glasnevin Cemetery - Trust to hold ceremony on Armistice Day
Glasnevin Cemetery - Trust to hold ceremony on Armistice Day

The Glasnevin Trust is publishing details of 43 men and women who served in the Commonwealth forces in both World Wars and are buried in unmarked graves in Glasnevin Cemetery.

They are due to be honoured, and have their graves marked with headstones, in a ceremony on Armistice Day - 11 November. The Trust is inviting any family members or relations of the deceased to get in touch ahead of the ceremony.

On 11 November last year the Glasnevin Trust and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission began the project of marking the graves. Headstones were erected at the graves of four Irish servicemen for the first time last year.

Ecumenical and military ceremonies will take place at the O'Connell Tower, Glasnevin Cemetery at 3pm on Thursday 11November.

Glasnevin Trust historian Shane MacThomais researched the stories of the 43 deceased. He went to Britain’s National Archives in Kew in England where he researched the military records of the deceased.

There he uncovered considerable detail about the personal and military lives of the 43 servicemen and women spanning from the Boer War, Chinese Boxer Rebellion, Zulu Wars, and World War I and II. Most of the graves date back to the First World War with the oldest of the 43 burials in 1914 and the most recent in 1947.

Speaking at the launch of the appeal to identify relatives of the deceased Chairman of Glasnevin Trust John Green, said: ‘We would urge families that can attend to do so. It will be a wonderful opportunity to bear witness to the honouring of their relative's noble deeds in pivotal times for world democracy.

Families may wish to contact our historian Shane MacThomais who has additional information about the deceased or use our online genealogical search facility which contains full burial records by logging on to www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy.’
