Town: Tororo, main town in the district of Tororo

Population: 40,400 (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2008)

Main industry: Tororo Cement Ltd factory, which produces 19,000 tonnes of cement per day and is the largest producer of the material in Uganda. It did use local supplies of limestone, which are now depleting. Agriculture is the main form of income; most people have small farms of between one and eight acres where farmers grow some crops and keep livestock

Region: The town of Tororo is located less than 10km from the border town of Malaba, which is Uganda's biggest gateway or inland port.

There is a very contentious plan to split the district of Tororo into the Mukujju and Kisoko districts, which is currently under consideration - a referendum has been proposed. There are differing views over who should retain the town of Tororo, which according to maps from 1926 place it in the Mukujju district

History: According to All Africa, Tororo was a route British colonists used – it had a military base, which was used especially during the two world wars. The town was also a base for expeditions to north Africa. The buildings in the town were constructed in the 1920s and 1930s by Indians
