A planned expansion by the medical devices company Medtronic will lead to the creation of 85 new jobs at its Galway facility.
The firm is to establish a European software development hub in the city, which will focus on enhanced care for those with implanted cardiac devices.
Medtronic says initiative is central to the continuing development of new products, aimed at "improving patient outcomes worldwide".
It will focus on cloud based platforms and new software that will help to link devices and the information they contain to clinicians in real time.
Advances in such technology in recent years has allowed for better monitoring of a range of cardiac conditions, with data being gathered and relayed back to medical experts from the implanted devices.
Described as "continuous, connected care", it aims to improve clinician efficiency and help patients live with greater confidence.
The company says the expansion builds on its existing base in the west and has been assisted by the availability of high skilled graduates in the region.
The IDA says the new Patient Care Systems hub aligns with Ireland’s national strategy to advance digital health capabilities.
This involves a greater linkage between the technology and medical technology sectors, in an effort to ensure the country is well placed to attract future investment and employment, as a result of ongoing advancements in this regard.
Medtronic will host an event in Galway next week at which it will outline the possible future benefits of such convergence.
Recruitment for the new roles is already under way.
