An initiative involving over 300 girls from primary schools across Waterford is set to take place with the aim of keeping them involved in sport.

The annual Waterford Girls in Sport Tournament aims to break down barriers, build confidence and create happy and memorable experiences of sport.

The fifth edition of the event will bring together over 325 girls from 18 primary schools across Waterford at the SETU Arena today.

The organisers have said this year's move to a larger venue reflects the growth of the tournament and allows for a full day of activity, including soccer, basketball, a workshop, as well as a Q&A session with female sporting role models.

Orna Murray of Move2B, a Waterford native and past pupil of one of the participating schools, will lead the workshop exploring barriers to participation and why girls can drop out of sport as they transition to secondary school.

The event gives girls the chance to see relatable role models

Move2B is a Waterford based organisation that states its mission is to equip coaches and groups to create "supportive, inclusive spaces that empower and support girls and female athletes".

Meanwhile, the Q&A with female athletes will include representatives from Waterford FC Women and SETU Waterford Wildcats.

Patrick Pender, Principal of Waterford Educate Together NS, said one of the most powerful elements of the tournament is that it is a Waterford community effort.

He said: "Waterford Educate Together NS, SETU, Waterford FC Women, Waterford Wildcats, Move2B and others have come together to create a day that celebrates local talent, local role models and local schools.

"Many of those involved - workshop leaders, teachers, referees, Q&A panellists - are Waterford people, including past pupils of schools taking part, who are now involved in sport at a very high level.

"For the girls attending, this gives them the chance to see relatable role models and to imagine themselves continuing in sport beyond primary school.

"At its core, the Waterford Girls in Sport Tournament is about breaking down barriers, building confidence and creating happy, memorable experiences of sport.

"Its growth over the past five years shows the appetite for inclusive opportunities for girls and the strength of what can happen when the Waterford community works together," Mr Pender added.
