Dublin Port has said that a fuel oil spill occurred at Dublin Port last night but that it has been contained within a confined area.

It said the incident happened at a berth on the eastern port around 8pm last night and that the Port's Oil Spill Response Plan was activated immediately.

"The Dublin Port shipping channel remains largely unaffected and there is no impact on other river users at this time.

"The leak was stopped at source, and the spill is contained within a confined area at the incident," a statement from the Dublin Port Company said.

Adding: "The relevant response teams remain onsite and are actively assessing and managing the situation, in co-ordination with relevant authorities, including the Coast Guard Containment booms, have been deployed and specialist contractors are onsite to manage and recover the material."

"Port customers, drivers and passengers should follow advice from terminal operators. Leisure users are unaffected but should continue to monitor www.dublinport.ie for updates.

"Dublin Port takes environmental protection very seriously and our priority is the safety and containment of the incident."

An investigation is under way to determine the cause and scale of the spill, the company said.

The statement added that further updates would be provided when available, and that it is not permitted to fly drones over the port.
