Cork City Council has refused to say if the freedom of the city will be removed from the former chairman of the Good Friday Agreement talks, George Mitchell, following revelations about his contacts with the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr Mitchell was granted the freedom of Cork in November 1998, during a ceremony which he attended at Cork City Hall.

His name featured in a tranche of documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein released last Friday.

On Monday, Queen's University Belfast announced it would remove the name of Mr Mitchell from a peace centre following the emergence of the information contained in the Jeffrey Epstein files.

A bust of Mr Mitchell has also been removed from the university grounds.

Cork City Council refused to comment when asked if it would be removing the freedom of Cork from Mr Mitchell.

Instead, a spokesman said Cork City Council "notes" the decision of Queen's University Belfast over the weekend.

In a statement Cork City Council said: "The freedom of Cork was conferred upon former Senator George Mitchell in 1998, at the request of the then Lord Mayor, to recognise his role in the Northern Ireland peace process.

"This once-off award was conferred upon him several years before there was public knowledge about the first allegations against Jeffrey Epstein.

"The City Council has no further comment on the matter at the moment."
