Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in Waterford

A pedestrian in his 40s has died after he was struck by a car in Waterford city.

Gardaí said they were alerted to the incident on the R448 in Sallypark at around 2.10am this morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was not injured in the incident.

The road was closed from Rice's Bridge to the New Rath Road roundabout for a technical examination and local diversions were in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone who was travelling on the road between 1.30am and 2.15am, and who may have camera footage, to contact them.
