A fisherman, aged in his 40s, has died after falling overboard from a fishing vessel off the northwest coast.
The incident happened at around 1:30pm yesterday off the coast of Árainn Mhór, within Irish territorial waters.
A spokeperson for the Department of Transport said the Coast Guard marine rescue coordination centre in Malin, Co Donegal, responded to a mayday call from a vessel.
It said the Co Sligo-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118, the Aranmore lifeboat and other vessels in the vicinity attended the location of the incident.
The man's body was recovered by the fishing vessel crew and winched onboard Rescue 118, the spokesperson said.
He was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A technical examination of the vessel has been carried out.
The man is not originally from Ireland, but it is understood that he had been a well-experienced fisherman who lived in Greencastle, Inishowen, for many years.
The Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Health and Safety Authority have been notified.
The coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be carried out, the results of which will determine the course of the garda investigation.
