Plans to construct over 200 homes on publicly owned land in Galway have been approved.

The project, involving the Land Development Agency (LDA) and Galway City Council, will result in 219 cost rental and social housing units on Dyke Road.

They will be built on a 1.8 hectare site, owned by the city council, with construction expected to commence in 2027.

The approval by An Coimisiún Pleanála is for the first phase of a development that envisages additional commercial, civic and cultural amenities on the site, close to the city centre.

It will see one, two and three bedroom apartments being constructed, in blocks ranging in height from five to nine storeys.

Some 90% of the homes in the first phase of development will be made available on a cost rental basis, with the remainder offered as social housing.

Planning permission has been granted subject to a number of conditions. These mostly relate to the manner in which the works will be carried out and the final layout of the development.

The Corrib Causeway: Tóchar na Coiribe plan is one of a number being advanced by the LDA in the city.

The agency is also progressing plans for other developments at Galway Harbour and at a brownfield site on Sandy Road. Work on the construction of over 300 homes at the Crown Square site in Mervue is expected to be completed next year.
