A 23-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with allegedly smuggling two people into the State at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford.

Roberto Nichitean, with an address in Romania, was brought before a special sitting of Wexford District Court this evening.

He is charged with assisting the entry of two people into the State at Rosslare Europort yesterday, where he knew or had reasonable cause to believe that by doing so would be a breach of Section 5 of the Immigration Act.

The alleged offences are contrary to Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act.

Detective Garda Stephen Burke from Wexford Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

The court heard Mr Nichitean made no reply when the charges were put to him.

There was no application for bail and Judge John O'Leary remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill Prison to appear before Wexford District Court again on Tuesday.

However, Ross Pratt-O'Brien BL, instructed by solicitor Marie Murphy, told the court that an application for bail would be made at Mr Nichitean's next appearance before the court.

Judge O'Leary also granted an application for both legal aid and a Romanian interpreter for the accused.

It is understood that the two people who entered the State are young men from Algeria and they have claimed asylum here.
