Efforts are under way to ensure that families with school children are allowed to stay at the Eyre Powell accommodation centre in Co Kildare.
However, it is unclear where other residents who are living in the centre will be accommodated.
Over 100 residents living in the IPAS centre in the former hotel in Newbridge were informed earlier this week that the centre was due to close.
They were told they would be relocated to accommodation centres in other counties including Tipperary and Louth.
However, in a statement, the Department of Integration said it is hoped that families with children in school in the area will not be moved to alternative accommodation.
The department said the decision to move the residents was due to fire safety issues at the property.
It said that it had been made aware of a fire safety notice issued by Kildare County Fire Services on the provider for the property.
It added that as a result, it is necessary to reduce the approved capacity at this centre, and agree with the provider, and with Kildare County Council, on a clear timeline for remedial works to be completed and certified.
The department said some residents at the centre will have to be moved to alternative accommodation as a result of this and described it as an "evolving situation".
The department said the residents' overall safety and welfare remain its priority.
