Dún Laoghaire: The story of the count

How it started ...

Fine Gael gained a seat in the four-seater constituency of Dún Laoghaire, with the election of both Minister of State Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and running mate Senator Barry Ward.

Mr Ward took a seat at the expense of Green Party Minister of State Ossian Smyth, who polled almost half of his total from 2020.

Pulling in 36% of first preferences, Fine Gael successfully transferred across the two candidates who achieved 21% and 15%, respectively.

Fianna Fáil's Cormac Devlin was re-elected with 15.8% of first preferences along with People Before Profit-Solidarity's Richard Boyd Barrett, whose vote was slightly down on the last General Election at 12.2%.

Sinn Féin's Shane O’Brien’s returned 8.9% of first preferences, also slightly lower than 2020 and staying in the race until the sixth count, while it was a good result for Social Democrats candidate Hugo Mills, who polled 7.5% of first preferences and was in the hunt for a seat until the final count.

Labour’s Martha Fanning returned 5.7%.

Aontú made ground in the constituency with Mairead Toibín, party leader Peadar Toibín’s sister, doubling her first preference vote to 4.2%.

The final two candidates in Dún Laoghaire were Cathy Lynch of The Irish People on 1.1%, and Independent Michael O’Doherty on 0.6%.
