How it started ...
With 20 candidates running in Carlow-Kilkenny, it took a long time for the seats to be filled, with no one elected until the eleventh count.
The first seat went to Fianna Fáil's John McGuinness, who topped the poll.
Next came Catherine Callaghan, who won a seat for Fine Gael in the Carlow part of the constituency as the party's first-ever female candidate here.
However, it was not to be for her two running mates from Kilkenny, with both Michael Doyle and David Fitzgerald losing out, calling the party's three-candidate strategy into question.
It was a strong day for Fianna Fáil with success for first-time Dáil candidate Peter 'Chap' Cleere, while Jennifer Murnane O'Connor retained her seat.
In the end Sinn Féin's Áine Gladney Knox was excluded on the final count with her running mate Natasha Newsome Drennan getting the final seat shortly after 4am on Monday morning.
For the Green Party, there was another major blow as outgoing Minister of State Malcolm Noonan who lost his seat.
Both the Social Democrats Patricia Stephenson and Aontú's Gary O'Neill were representing their parties for the first time in this constituency and both felt they had performed well.
