The construction of a multi-million euro further education and training campus in west Limerick has moved a step closer with the annoucement today that the project is to go to the design and planning stage of development.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan made the announcement at the Newcastle West FET campus on Station Road.

Minister O'Donovan said the capital investment will be significant not just for students and staff locally, but for the wider community of Limerick and Clare Education & Training Board (ETB).

The approval allows the Limerick and Clare Education ETB to go to the pre-tender stage of development including project design, planning and procurement for a state-of-the-art further education facility at Station Road.

Donncha Ó Treasaigh, the Acting Chief Executive of Limerick and Clare Education ETB, said it will address structural imbalance in the county.

The new infrastructure will allow for a centralised facility supporting learners and local industries in the largest population centre outside of Limerick city's metropolitan area.
