The former assistant garda commissioner John O'Driscoll was remembered at his funeral mass as a "fearless and dedicated" garda who served the country with distinction and integrity.

The 64-year-old who had been in charge of An Garda Siochána’s fight against serious and organised crime, died suddenly last week.

The Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner attended his funeral at St Brigid’s Church in Killester in Co Dublin.

He had served 41-years in An Garda Siochána.

His cap and gloves were placed on his coffin which was draped in the tricolour.

The President and the Taoiseach were represented by their aide de camp, Colonel Stephen Howard and Commandant Karen Rynn.

The Taoiseach attended the removal last night, and met and sympathised with the family.

The mass was celebrated by both Garda Chaplains, Father Joe Kennedy and Archdeacon David Pierpoint.
