A man in his 30s has been arrested after a car and a house were damaged with a digger on the Limerick/Kerry border.

Gardaí were called to a house at Rylane, Abbeyfeale, just before 8pm last night, after they were contacted about an incident involving burglary and criminal damage.

It is understood the man had damaged a car and an unoccupied house in the area with a digger.

The man threatened gardaí with a machete when they confronted him and fled the scene to a nearby forest.

The Armed Support Unit based in Limerick, a garda helicopter from the Air Support Unit in Dublin and the Garda Dog Unit from Cork all travelled to the scene.

A cordon was put in place and a search was conducted in the forest.

Gardaí located the man, but he refused to comply with their directions and continued to threaten them.

He was arrested after he was tasered.

Gardaí say the man is currently being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

They have also preserved a number of scenes for technical examination.

The Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission confirmed it received a referral from An Garda Siochána in relation to the incident.

A spokesperson for GSOC told RTÉ News the referral was in relation to the discharge of a taser and to the discharge of a disabling bean bag round, described as a "less than lethal device".

The spokesperson said: "The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) received a notification from An Garda Síochána on July 9, 2024, relating to the discharge of a 40mm launcher and taser in Rylane, Duagh, Listowel, County Kerry, shortly after midnight.

"The notification is under review by GSOC and we are therefore not in a position to comment further at this time."
