A new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Corrib in Co Galway is to be named Droichead an Dóchais.

The decision follows a public consultation in the city over recent months.

Over 60 names were proposed and the official name was approved following a recommendation by the Civic Naming Committee, Galway County Council said.

The first new crossing of the river in more than 30 years opened to pedestrians and cyclists last May.

It forms part of a proposed transport corridor across the city, aimed at reducing congestion and cutting carbon emissions.

An official naming ceremony will take place in the coming weeks

The structure was assembled over several months and moved into place with cranes at the end of 2022.

It crosses three water courses and is located just south of the existing Salmon Weir Bridge.

An official naming ceremony will be held in the coming weeks, the council said.
