Local councillors have condemned what happened and say it is very unusual to have an incident like this in what is usually a very quiet area.

Gardaí said no arrests have been made at this time. They are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Local Independent Councillor Francis Timmins, who was at the scene today, said: "I think the community is shocked this morning to wake up to such dreadful news on an Easter Sunday, and terrible that somebody has ended up in a critical condition.

"So I think firstly, it's important to send our regards and our thoughts to their family and to the person and hopefully they make a full recovery, and to the other person that was injured in the assault."
