Hundreds gather at Russian embassy to vote in presidential election

Hundreds of people have gathered outside the Russian embassy in Dublin to vote in the country's presidential election.

All but one of the voters who spoke to RTÉ News in Dublin said they were there to take part in the protest against President Vladimir Putin.

Similar scenes occurred from midday at embassies in European capitals as well as in Tokyo and Bangkok.

The initiative, named 'Noon against Putin', called on Russians to vote in person at noon and was proposed by supporters of former opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in an Arctic prison colony last month.

"In Russia, it is really difficult to do something active today because all people go in jail, so our action here, we just support people and we just hope all war is stopped," said Anna.

Another voter, Vikto, said he turned up to show he is against President Putin.

Another man called Vladimir said: "It's to express I want fair elections, I don't want to vote for our current president."

Another woman, Alsu, queued up with her daughter and her Irish husband, and said: "At least we set an example for our kids that we have do something, (rather) than do nothing."

For many it was to show solidarity with Russians in Russia.

"We to show the other people that they are not alone, that they have to know about the other people who are against the war," said Slava.

Polls have already closed in Russia's far eastern regions and final polls will close at 8pm Moscow time (5pm Irish time).

A preliminary result is expected tonight.
