Galway city councillors have formally approved the appointment of a new chief executive for the local authority.

Leonard Cleary succeeds Brendan McGrath, who retired from the job last year.

He was chosen following a recruitment process conducted by the Public Appointments Service.

Elected representatives ratified his appointment at this afternoon's meeting of the Council.

Mr Cleary has previously held several leadership roles in Clare County Council, where he most recently oversaw tourism development.
