The man who died in a house fire in Dungarvan Co Waterford has been named locally as Jim Sandford.
Emergency services were called to his home at Davis Mews in the early hours of this morning.
Nobody else was injured.
Mr Sandford, who was in his 80s, lived alone at the house and was retired.
He was from the area and had previously worked as a painter and decorator.
His body was discovered after local fire services extinguished the fire.
He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 9am.
Local Fine Gael County Councillor Damien Geoghegan said Mr Sandford was well liked in the area.
"He was a member of a well-known and long-established family here in Dungarvan. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim and our sympathies go out to his family and his many friends and neighbours in Davis Mews," Mr Geoghegan said.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Mr Sandford's body.
Gardaí are conducting an investigation, but it is understood the fire started accidently and foul play is not suspected.
