Students urged to check register ahead of Presidential Election

An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland's electoral commission, has begun visiting college campuses to encourage students to register and to make a plan to vote in next month’s Presidential Election.

It estimates that 60,000 young people have turned 18 since the last general election and are eligible to vote once they have registered.

The deadline to register to vote is 7 October.

An coimisiún visited the University of Limerick as part of their information campaign and is due to visit six other campuses in the coming weeks.

"Our focus is on making sure that as many people are eligible, registered and able to vote. So we're doing these drives all around the country to get the people registered, to get them informed, and to help them make their decision for who's going to be the next presidency,' said Brian Dawson, communications manager with the commission.

He said: "We do a survey after every election, and after the general election, we found out that this age group, 18 to about 34 they have the lowest level of registrations for election of any age group in the country.

"So that's why we're here on campus, specifically targeting them, making it as easy as possible for people to vote and to be registered.

"Because what we found, and what we're telling people here today, is it only takes three minutes to register to vote, and then you can have your say on who's to be our next president."

The commission is also reminding students that if they are away from their registered home address on polling day because of college, they can apply to move their vote or apply for a postal vote.

The deadline for that is 29 September.

The commission also intends to hold other awareness events as polling day draws nearer.

It also said research it carried out after last year’s general election showed that 18-34 year old made up the biggest cohort of eligible voters who had yet to register.

To vote in a presidential election, you must be an Irish citizen, ordinarily resident here, aged 18 or over, and registered.
