UNIFIL investigating death of Indonesian peacekeeper - spokesperson
UNIFIL's spokesperson in Lebanon has said the force is investigating the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper who was killed by a flying projectile.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Kandice Ardiel said that last night a projectile of unknown origin hit the base near Adchit al-Qusayr and caused very serious injuries to two peacekeepers.
One of the peacekeepers died from his injuries while another was airlifted to a hospital in Beirut where he is stable following surgery, though his injuries are described as very serious.
There will be a report following the investigation that will be shared at the end of the process.
"If any party is found to be responsible, the mission will make a formal complaint," Ms Ardiel said.
She added that the mission is extremely challenging as the IDF and Hezbollah engage in clashes.
"Our positions have been hit several times, not just our headquarters in Naqoura where we've seen bullets hitting buildings and vehicles.
"We've had rockets impact in open areas and shrapnel in different places. In other bases we've seen similar things happening.
"But there have also been a couple of incidents like the tragic one last night in which our bases have suffered direct hits and fortunately up until last night there had been no fatalities.
"We did have a serious injury of a Ghanaian peacekeeper, who is stable and recovering now," she said.
