Targeting digital services 'unlikely' - Harris

The Tánaiste and Minister for and Trade has been making remarks in recent moments...

The Tánaiste Simon Harris has said that it is "highly unlikely" that US digital services will be targeted in the EU's response to tariffs.

Speaking on Newstalk radio, Mr Harris said the introduction of this tax would be the "nuclear option".

"This relates to what they call the anti-coercion instruments, and this is known as the big bazooka in the European Union's economic toolkit," he said.

"Ireland would have very significant concerns, but I should say this, I think it's highly unlikely at this stage," he added.

Mr Harris also said he believes there is a strong consensus among European Union countries for a "calm, measured" response to US tariffs.

Mr Harris is among those due to attend an emergency meeting of EU trade ministers in Luxembourg as global markets brace themselves for another turbulent week in the aftermath of Mr Trump's battery of tariffs.
