Dublin Rathdown was mooted as a separate constituency in 2013, largely replacing Dublin South and holding its first election in 2016.

A population of 12,407 people in three Electoral Divisions and part of a fourth are being transferred into the constituency from the Dún Laoghaire constituency, mostly from leafy Foxrock.
