• Lie of the land...

There has been no change to the number of seats in Louth since the last election and it stays at five seats.

It can be seen in two distinct parts.

The north which is very much a border region and has as its hub Dundalk, and the south, which has become part of the sprawling Dublin commuter belt centred around the town of Drogheda.

So geography is a big factor as Dundalk votes stay in Dundalk and Drogheda votes stay in Drogheda and never the twain shall meet.

As a result of the Electoral Commission review, the constituency will lose 11,500 voters from parts of Co Meath like Julianstown and Laytown.

These will go into the Meath East constituency.

Bettystown has been split between the constituencies of Louth and Meath, which ensures that the southern outskirts of Drogheda that are in Co Meath remain in the Louth constituency.
