RTÉ has said that allowances can apply in a number of scenarios and across management and non-management roles, including allowance for long service, for acting-up at a higher level or role-related allowances, e.g. producers, journalists, riggers, HGV Truck-driving.

It said allowances can be permanent or temporary in nature, and can apply section-wide or on an individual basis.

On 31 December 2022, accounts showed that RTÉ paid close to 1,100 allowances, of which 61 are car allowances.

RTÉ said that "car allowance amounts vary. Car allowances do not only apply to Executive members."
