People's car insurance policies remain valid if they drive during today's code red weather warning, according to Insurance Ireland.

The insurance body has encouraged people to heed the warnings that are in place and to avoid making unneccesary journeys, however it said that insurance cover remains in place if they are required to drive during the storm.

It said that comprehensive insurance will cover any damage caused to a person's vehicle by the storm, however third party insurance will not.

Motoring experts also suggest that any extreme risks taken by drivers could be deemed to be contributory negligence in the event of an accident.
