South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath may contest the European Elections as an independent candidate in the Ireland-South constituency.

Mr McGrath told RTÉ News that he has been contacted by "large volumes of people right across the country".

He added: "For the most part, these are people who are sick and tired of the endless self-congratulatory rhetoric of the vast majority of the political class at national and European level."

He said he is giving active consideration to running in the elections on 23 May, but has not yet decided on a final course of action.
