Six weeks to build two Irish popemobiles

In 1979, it fell to two Cork men to keep Pope John Paul II moving when he visited Ireland.

Lifelong friends Matt O’Brien and John Mulhare ran a coachbuilding company, building commercial vehicles and horseboxes.

They were asked to build what would become the iconic Irish popemobile.

Mr O’Brien recalls: "We had five weeks, or six, to build two. People didn’t realise there were two at all. They thought this thing was flying around the country."

He speaks about the "chariot", bulletproof glass, invoices to the pope and the biggest challenges they faced.
