There will be comprehensive live coverage, analysis and discussion of the pope's visit across RTÉ; online and on television and radio.


There will be full coverage on the RTÉ News Now app and on the website on Saturday and Sunday from 7am-11pm.

This will include live reporting on all the pope's engagements and events; stories and analysis and the best videos and photos from the Phoenix Park, Knock and Croke Park.

All of RTÉ's television coverage will be streamed on the app and website and the best of the news, highlights, videos and images will be on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

On television

On RTÉ One and RTÉ News Now there will be rolling coverage of the public events, including the pope's visit to Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin Castle, St Mary’s Pro Cathedral and the Capuchin Day Centre on Saturday.

Mary Kennedy will be joined by a panel of guests at Croke Park for The Festival of Families event on Saturday evening. It will be broadcast on RTÉ2 from 5.45-9pm.

On Sunday, there will be live coverage of the pope's visit to Knock shrine on RTÉ One and RTÉ News Now.

Bryan Dobson will be reporting from the Phoenix Park for the mass - and the build up - on RTÉ One and RTÉ News Now.

After Pope Francis departs, Joe Duffy will host The Francis Effect - a Would You Believe? Special on RTÉ One. This will be a live studio discussion of the impact of the pope's visit - on Ireland, the family and the Catholic Church.

Feature programming will include Mary McAleese’s Modern Family, (RTÉ One, Wednesday 22 August) where the former president charts changes in the Irish family since Pope John Paul II's visit in 1979.

A special edition of Prime Time (RTÉ One, Thursday 23 August) will discuss the condition and future of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

RTÉ Nationwide will feature three special programmes during the week of the pope's visit as presenters Mary Kennedy and Anne Cassin visit Knock, Cork and Dublin to meet people preparing for the visit.

On radio

Michael Comyn will present a special edition of the religious magazine show, The Leap of Faith (RTÉ Radio 1), including live coverage as Pope Francis touches down at Dublin Airport.

On Saturday evening, Marty Morrissey and Brenda Donohue will present live coverage from the Festival of Families event on RTÉ Radio 1 from 6-9pm.

On Sunday morning, there will be a special Morning Ireland programme broadcast from Knock on RTÉ Radio 1. It will be presented by Rachel English and Gavin Jennings from 9-11am.

On RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Mícheál Ó Leidhin will report from Dublin Airport on Saturday morning while Frances Nic Géadaigh will report from the Knock shrine on Sunday morning. Máirín Ní Ghadhra will host a live discussion in studio on both mornings.

On RTÉ Radio 1, Marian Finucane will be joined by a panel, to offer listeners live coverage from Knock.

While on Sunday, Marian will be joined by a panel on The Marian Finucane Show to offer listeners live coverage and context of the Pope’s visit, including his meetings with the President and the Taoiseach.

In the afternoon, Joe Duffy will report on the mass and the build-up in the Phoenix Park on RTÉ Radio 1.
