Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke is to write to all agencies under his remit to demand they eliminate unnecessary red tape.

It comes as the coalition tries to eliminate unnecessary administrative burdens across Government departments which will be urged to improve digitalisation and streamlining in the coming weeks.

The Department of Enterprise is co-ordinating a cross-Government red tape challenge which will also see the streamlining of administrative processes for businesses.

Mr Burke has reviewed and reduced the numbers of pages and questions for the most popular Local Enterprise Office grants, some by up to 50%, and this is now being implemented in Enterprise Ireland, with a 24-hour turnaround time for small grants now being targeted.

The 'once only' principle is being implemented, with work underway to merge application processes across different grants, ensuring businesses only need to provide their data once, with proportionality applied in terms of small-scale grants.

"These enterprises are the backbone of our economy, and time spent navigating bureaucracy is time lost to running their businesses, to innovation and to job creation. This is impacting the wider economy and action needs to be taken now," Mr Burke said.

Simplification measures are also likely to be discussed at the Competitiveness Council during Ireland's hosting of the EU Presidency.
