RTÉ executives are to return to the Oireachtas in the coming weeks with an appearance before the Dáil's Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The committee met in private earlier where it agreed to invite senior management from the broadcaster to a hearing in July.

It is understood the chair of the committee, Sinn Féin's John Brady, informed TDs that RTÉ Director-General Kevin Bakhurst had made contact to say he was willing to appear at PAC even before legislation was put in place to make RTÉ answerable to the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Mr Brady brought forward the proposal to bring in Mr Bakhurst and other RTÉ executives, to which all members agreed.

"It's quite unusual for someone to proactively contact the Public Accounts Committee and make themselves available to appear, so credit should be given for that", committee member and Fine Gael TD James Geoghegan said.

He added: "There are still significant questions around transparency on pay and conditions that were not fully addressed at the Oireachtas Media Committee, and it's important that we now have an opportunity to examine those issues in detail."

A hearing will be set for early to mid-July, depending on availability.

Mr Bakhrust told the media committee yesterday how "one or two" people at the broadcaster could now be earning more than him, despite an earlier insistence nobody at RTÉ should earn more than the director-general's salary of €250,000 following the controversy relating to the organisation publicly under-reporting payments to Ryan Tubridy.

Mr Bakhurst also said it was regrettable that an effort to be more open around the Derek Mooney pay issue had come to be categorised as a scandal.
