Gerard Hutch has registered his candidacy for the upcoming Dublin Central bye-election.

It is understood that Mr Hutch visited the Dublin City Sheriff's office today to hand in his nomination papers.

Mr Hutch, who has been described by the Special Criminal Court as the head of the Hutch Organised Crime Group, fell short of taking a seat in the constituency at the last general election in 2024.

Dublin Central is the constituency of Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, as well as Gary Gannon of the Social Democrats and Labour's Marie Sherlock.

The bye-election, on Friday 22 May, is being held to fill the seat vacated by Fine Gael's Pascal Donohoe.

Six candidates have registered to date.

They are: Fine Gael's Ray McAdam, Daniel Ennis of the Social Democrats, People Before Profit's Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin and Independents Mannix Flynn, Malachy Steenson and Gerard Hutch.

Other candidates expected to be on the ballot paper are: Sinn Féin’s Janice Boylan, the Green Party’s Janet Horner, Labour's Ruth O’Dea, Ian Noel Smyth of Aontú and Fianna Fáil’s John Stephens.

Nominations close at midday on Friday 1 May.
