The Minister for Housing James Browne has told the Dáil that 9,089 new build social homes were delivered last year - setting a new record for annual output.

However this figure was below the original target set in Housing for All of 10,000 social new builds for 2025.

The full data for social and affordable home delivery for last year has not yet been published.

Minister James Browne said the 9,089 figure represented an increase of 1,256 or 16% above 2024.

"This is the highest number of newly built social homes in the history of the state". 10.45

Labour Spokesperson on Housing Conor Sheehan said that the output was below the Government's own target.

The minister countered that social home delivery was coming from "a standing start".

And he said that the last time that Labour had the Department of Housing, just 75 social homes were delivered, adding "we left you with too many houses".

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Housing Eoin Ó Broin said "social housing lists and homelessness will continue to rise" because the Government missed its new build social housing target for 2025.

In a statement, Mr Ó Broin said the figure revealed in the Dáil by the minister confirmed that the target was missed by 10%.

"The 10,000 target was too low to begin with. We need at least 15,000 new build social housing homes every year to reduce waiting lists and homelessness.

"Not only was the target too low but it was missed. At a time of rising homelessness this is utterly unacceptable.

"The consequence of this is that social housing waiting lists and homelessness will continue to rise in 2026 as they did in 2025."
